Because we thrive for the love that seems to be impossible, and when it turns out to be possible we still have hope for the easier battle of our lives. It gives us all hope. I know the one thing I do when I'm reading is pretend I'm the person in the book and how it makes me feel, and then I feel hope...
It gives you a feeling that your life can't. You crave the book to get the hell out of your own life, and live in the others. You live a life you would have never expected. When your through with the book you feel something in your heart and you can't place it anywhere else. You crave, life...

I think it became popular its because when the Twilight Saga or the New Moon or the Twilight movie came out.
Well, I have heard young people talk about it a lot.

Maybe that's the reason.

Not all vampire/werewolf romances are "shitty."

I think, for me, the reason I like vampires and werewolves (whether it's a romance or not) is because they are so human - they look like humans, talk like humans, behave like humans and, in the case of werewolves, eat like humans - but they aren't human. Vampires are stronger, faster, have better senses, think differently. They are the ultimate "superpredator." They feed on us humans, who are "the top of the food chain" easily and efficiently. They hide in shadows and darkness and blood and hide their existence (in most stories) from humans. It's peculiar; these almost all powerful beings aren't taking over the world. They tantalize our imagination and let us wonder about all the fantastical creatures that could be out there.

Werewolves are human, only changing into large, powerful wolves (which were always depicted as scary and evil in the old days) during the three nights of the full moon. Then, they are completely animalistic, hunting with no logical strategy like their human counterpart would. They are completely taken over by their animal instincts. They used to be depicted as the "daylight guardians of the vampires." Two superhuman species guarding each other from the human hunters, while feasting on them during the night. It's eerie and fascinating.

Also, both their legends go back centuries and come from all over the world. Every culture has it's own "vampire" that is both similar and dissimilar to a completely different culture half-way around the world. Much like dragons, it's interesting to think that these creatures may actually exist, or have existed at one point; how else did these cultures come up with such similar creatures?

They are also the easiest things to write about. Like them or hate them, everyone knows them. They aren't bound by rules (as Twilight showed us) so you can do whatever you want and, as the Morganville vampires showed us, you can have them do whatever they want and no one thinks anything of it, since they're so strong and powerful.
