Here's a delayed answer: Read "Ring" by Koji Suzuki.

If you're thinking about the movie, have no fear as it is completely different. The characters, the plot, the elements all much more warped than the film.

It has a very nice eerie atmosphere and the protaganists seems to be alone throughout the entire story, making him and the reader's mind very vulnerable to anything that might happen.

The writing is a little simple and the beginning is slow, but you get into it quickly as it reads like a movie.

Sorry, I hadn't the chance to answer earlier.

You can go for the Stephen King novels, especially "It" and "Christine". "Carrie" is not bad either, but I think it more sad than scary.

I know this sounds silly, but Goodnight Kiss and Goodknight Kiss 2 are really good books by R.L. Stines; although not really scary. A book that scared me was Falling. Sorry I forgot the author's name...
