Good Omens By Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. I was just telling someone about this book last night. The angel, Aziraphael, who took pity on Adam and Eve after they were expelled from the garden and gave them a flaming sword to keep them warm, and the demon, Crowley, who was the snake responsible for their expulsion, are unlikely friends in the end times, and decide that they're not quite ready for the world to end.
As they come up with a scheme to stop it, the Satanic nuns have accidentally misplaced the antichrist and subsequently can't find him.
Meanwhile, Anathema Device, the professional descendant of the prophet Agnes Nutter, deals quite sensibly with the coming apocalypse, if only because she knew how and when it was going to happen.
"We hear the world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just before dinner. Unfortunatly, Sister Mary Loquacious of the Chattering Order has misplaced the Antichrist. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse ride motorcycles. And the representatives from Heaven and Hell have decided they actually like the human race..."
Have a nice doomsday!
