Good Spelling and Grammar Question

Saul_Mikoliunas posted on Mar 18, 2008 at 06:55PM
I'm not sure why but for some reason I have just thought of something and I don't know the answer.
Why when you put an I by itself does it have to be a capital? I mean, I always knew that I by itself equals capital but......for what reason?
Strange question but it has been irritating me for the last five minutes.

In Dutch it's not like that.. I think it's only in English, but I don't know why.

I gather that I was originally written in lowercase, but because it did not yet have a tittle (the dot over the lowercase i), it could get lost or misinterpreted in writing. They capitalised it in order to make it distinct. Or something.

I have no clue...That's a good question though! It's going to bug me now too. Thanks.

(I know it's late, but, better late than never, right?) The way I was taught was: I by itself means I(as in "I like chocolate"). It's a name (in a way) and names are always capitalized.
