Oh, Chuck Bass. The "Womanizer" promo definitely had it right:
Love to Hate. Hate to Love.
I've hated him with a passion and loved him passionately. I think that's what makes his character very real, though.
He's very proud, and I think that stems from him being such a high profile member of society but also being a nouveau riche member, so he will never have the shine of having a legacy in the world he loves so much, all he has is his personal pride to keep him at the forefront of it. So, although it is a form of self confidence it's also a form of insecurity, which instantly makes his character very unusual, very complex and therefore intriguing, likeable, and as I mentioned before, real.
His pride is also what makes his relationship with Blair work so very well. They are both proud characters for opposite reasons, Chuck's because he has no strong legacy, Blair's because she has a strong legacy that she feels she must live up to. This is one of the many ways in which they are so alike but for totally opposite reasons, which is just a totally confusing experience for the viewer, but very appealing.
Also, because of his pride the feelings he has for Blair soften the viewer to him a lot because it's so unexpected, and for him to be able to sacrifice something so important to his character as his pride for ONE girl shows that he must have very impressive feelings for her.
HOWEVER, his pride also works to the negative for his character. Sometimes it can get in the way of his likeability, when he is too proud. For example, much of the Second Season, aside from odd episodes and the end. Hence why Chuck and Blair were not working out for a lot of the season; too much pride stopped him from softening the way he did in the First Season, and was making him very conceited and a bit of an ass.
Though, overusing his pride is a very immature way of protecting himself, hence why it raged at the death of his father, and why towards the end of the season he was able to finally show his feelings for Blair; he had grown up, and didn't need to "protect" himself so much.
Therefore, I love and hate Chuck for the same reason. I would not like him to leave the show though, because he is such an interesting and unusual character... and as much as I hate him sometimes, I do love to hate him... and then a few episodes later I will just love him again, and hate myself for it!
