Honestly, I think Serena just wants whoever she knows she can't - or shouldn't - have. All of her relationships have been with "forbidden" men (teachers, husbands, poor guys, etc.) As soon as her object of affection seriously returns the feelings and a relationship comes into play, she bails/falls for someone else. I don't know if she's ever loved a man as much as she simply loves being in love. It's kind of sad, really.

And ya know...now that I think about it, Nate is pretty much the same way. Maybe they really are perfect for each other, lol

You know, i think Serena just WANTS to love Dan the most. For whatever reason, she seems to voice different things then her actions. When she was with Nate, Dan was nowhere on her mind. She was beyond happy with Nate and there were no signs of her wanting Dan.

it's funny to me though that during her relationship with Dan in S1, we saw many signs of Serena still having feelings for Nate. Even in S4 when Serena was supposedly trying to decide, and then claimed that she had no doubt in choosing Dan - we saw her actions reflect oppositely.

I picked Nate but I think it's somewhat of a tie between Nate and Dan. I prefer Nate though. If he wasn't an option it would have been Dan and Serena.
