WHY does George tell Lennie to fight Curly?

I know that Lennie doesn't do anything until George tells him to, but I can't think of WHY George tells him to. Lennie's so big, there's not much Curly could have done to him with just his hands. Was George just telling Lennie to start defending himself, and Lennie took it a little bit far?
