Do you think Jack ever really loved Elizabeth?
I believe he only fancied her, because she was a pretty and smart woman.

No. I think he was attracted to her, and the idea that someone like her would never be expected or accepted to be with him - the forbidden aspect of the idea. I also think that he grew to like/admire her a bit as he got to know her. But I never thought he loved her.
