Let me explain.
China, due to the large amount of manufacturing, has a pretty high GDP (GDP meaning how much money the country as a whole makes.)
However, factory work tends not to pay as well as many of the more white collar jobs we tend to see in more developed countries. As such, despite the amount of manufacturing that goes on there, the GDP per capita is low (GDP per capita basically meaning how much money the average person in a country makes.)
Basically, the amount of things made in china is offset by the amount of people there, and so the people in China tend to be a little poor.
For some numbers:
GDP:
US: 18,561,930
China: 11,391,619
Japan: 4,730,300
Germany: 3,494,900
UK: 2,649,890
GDP per capita
Luxembourg: 101,994
Switzerland: 80,603
Norway: 74,598
Qatar: 68,940
Ireland: 61,206
(Note how none of the top five countries for GDP is in the top five for GDP per capita.)
