I know I've been going on about this a lot lately, but I want to challenge every single one of you to try and start a chain reaction of kindness. I've recently had a Rachel's Challenge assembly at my school. We have one every few years. But this time, we had new material that really inspired me to begin my own chain reaction. Rachel's Challenge involves five challenges:
1. Look for the best in people
2. Dream big
3. Choose positive influences
4. Speak with kindness
5. Start your own chain reaction
Accepting and achieving these challenges isn't a hard thing to do if you really decide to try. Showing love and kindness to a few people every day can start those people showing kindness, and then begin a chain reaction of kindness.
If you don't know the background of Rachel's Challenge, this is it: Rachel Joy Scott was the first one to be shot and killed in the 1999 Columbine High School shooting. Rachel kept journals and wrote essays filled with her ideas and what became her Challenge. She believed that if one person could take the time to show some kindness, that it could start a chain reaction of kindness. Rachel always said that she was going to impact the world. Heck yeah she did. After her death, the Rachel's Challenge group came about. They have done presentations across the globe and touched the hearts of millions, just like Rachel said she would do.
I want all of you to close your eyes. Think about the people you love, the people you care about. I want you to show each and every one of them a little kindness whenever you can. And also, I invite you to try sticking up for people being picked on, if they're your friend or not. I want you to find the people who look lonely and try to talk to them. I want you to look past stereotypes and labels and just get to know people before you judge them. Mentally give them three chances to prove to you that they have potential. Rachel once put in her diary "I won't be labeled as average". Don't label anyone before you know them. I want you to try keeping a journal. I don't care what you write in it, but what you right could make a big difference some day. You think Anne Frank knew her diary was going to be famous one day? Do you think Rachel herself knew that the six journals she had would become the basis of a group entirely based on her ideas? Also, I want you to try and make a little difference in your area, wherever that may be. Who knows? You might just start your own chain reaction.
