First off thank you, Layla for the inspiration to write this. Tbh, I think every Beatles fan should avoid this movie! Here's why.
First off no disrespect to John Lennon, he's a wonderful actor, singer, writer and activist. But this film is not good. It stars Michael Crawford (great actor) and he's basically narrating the film. The movie starts off funny and campy complete with John Lennon's amazing wit and playful banter! His haircut and glasses combo is also really cool! But when hasn't he ever looked wonderful!? The film so far seems like a winner. The chemistry between him and Michael is amazing! And considering this movie was directed by Richard Lester (HDN and Help!) one would think this film was a fun cheeky comedy. But as the film continues it becomes dark with Michael Crawford's character becoming heartless and cold. And soon each character dies in battle (very gory and always startling) and his character just shrugs it off while John's character is becoming depressing, hopeless and angry. Then it happens suddenly John is shot during the film in a shooting scene and he dies. (I swear you're going to need a sedative afterwards) It's so eerie to how he actually died it's scary and so sad. Later in the film John and the other soldiers come back as a zombie hallucination taunting Michael for his actions and blaming him for their deaths. Fun times! 🙄 But at the end of the film the title takes a dark and eerie take when Michael tells a relative of one of the deceased soldiers 'that's how I won the war' Suddenly the title isn't so cute. I have always regretted seeing this movie. The images still stay stuck in my head. I found out later that this movie was a dark comedy (which I have never seen before) so if you're feeling strong and love dark comedies hope you enjoy this movie. If not, I would strongly recommend not seeing it especially if you are a devoted Beatles or John Lennon fan. As for me that film is a huge 'NO!
