During its lifetime, Forth Worth's Tandy Subway was the only privately-owned subway line in the United States. Originally built to connect a department store with a parking lot, the subway ran from 1963 until 2002.

Before the State Street Subway was built, the Chicago Tunnel Company was running thousands of freight cars 40 feet below the streets of downtown Chicago.

For some reason these photos strike me as straight out of the Matrix. Must be all the wiring/cabling. Very cool stuff.

The American Public Transportation Association has a lot of great statistical data about all the transit systems in the U.S. Very useful reference for comparative research or just browsing.

Mark Kavanagh is a die-hard railfan and this is one of the best personal sites out there. He's visited countless systems worldwide and written them up and posted extensive photosets. Really nice site.

Very cool drawing from the Radical Cartography website that shows the relative size and complexity of the various rail-based transit networks in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

This is not the official MTA site, but it's way more interesting. The most extensive NYC rail site out there. On top of that, the site has an amazing collection of photos about rail systems from around the world.

This is hands-down on of the best metrofan sites out there. Focus is on heavy rail systems (though some light rail systems make the cut). Lots of news and construction updates and excellent, original metro maps.
